This policy explains what information Apparel Diary (appareldiary.com) collects, why, and the choices you have. It describes how the site works today. If that changes, this page will be updated.

If you only read the site

You can read every article and use every calculator without an account. We do not ask readers for personal information. The calculators run in your browser, and the numbers you type into them are not sent to us.

Like most websites, our server and our network provider process technical information for every request: your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and limit abuse. Your IP address is also used briefly in memory to rate-limit actions such as sign-in attempts and view counting. It is not saved against a reader profile.

Article view counts

Each article shows a total view count. When you open an article, your browser tells our server that the article was read, and a counter goes up by one. The count is a single number per article. We do not keep a record of which articles a particular person has read.

Accounts

If you register, we store your name, your email address, a hashed password and any profile details you choose to add, such as a headline, biography, photo or website. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt and are never stored or logged in plain text.

We send a verification code to your email address when you register. The email is delivered by a third-party email delivery provider, which receives your email address for that purpose.

If you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us. We do not receive your Google password.

Content you submit

Articles, comments and profile text that you submit are stored in the site database. Once published, they are publicly visible with your name attached. Comments may be held for review before they appear.

Cookies and browser storage

  • Sign-in cookies. A session cookie keeps you signed in, and a security cookie protects the sign-in form. They are used only for signing in.
  • Preferences. Your light or dark theme choice is saved in your browser's local storage. A short-lived note in session storage stops the same article view being counted twice in one visit.
  • Analytics cookies. See the next section.
  • Advertising cookies. See the advertising section below.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are read and how the site performs. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information such as your approximate location, device, browser and the pages you view. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics cookies are switched off unless consent has been given. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services, and you can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which measures page views and performance without cookies.

Advertising

Apparel Diary may display advertisements served by third-party advertising networks, currently Adsterra and HilltopAds, and possibly Google AdSense. Most are banners shown inside the page. Some formats, called pop-unders, can open a new browser tab behind the page after you click on it. Where ads are shown, the following applies:

  • Ad networks use cookies, device identifiers and similar technologies, together with your IP address, browser and device details and the pages you view, to choose and measure ads and to detect fraud. They may use this to show you ads based on your visits to this and other websites.
  • How Adsterra handles this information, and your rights, are described in its privacy policy and cookies policy. How HilltopAds handles it is described in its privacy policy.
  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
  • We do not show third-party ads to people who are signed in, to visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, or to browsers that send a Global Privacy Control signal. This site does not show a cookie consent message.

We do not sell your account information to advertisers, and we do not send your name or email address to any advertising network.

Other services that process data for us

  • Cloudflare delivers the site and protects it from abuse. It processes your IP address and request details, and may set a security cookie.
  • Our hosting provider runs the server and database where account data and content are stored.
  • An email delivery provider sends account emails such as verification codes.
  • Adsterra and HilltopAds serve banner and pop-under advertising where ads are shown, as described above.
  • Google provides analytics, optional sign-in and, if AdSense is used, advertising, as described above.

How long we keep information

Account information is kept while your account exists. Published articles and comments stay public until they are removed. You can ask us to delete your account and the personal details attached to it at any time.

Your choices

  • You can update your profile from your dashboard.
  • You can ask us for a copy of your account data, to correct it, or to delete it.
  • You can ask us to remove an article or comment you submitted.
  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site still works for reading.

Children

Apparel Diary is written for industry professionals and students. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
